CBD salves are a great addition to any wellness toolkit. Plus, you can make them yourself at home. While there are some great CBD-infused salves out there, we also love a DIY option for those seeking the benefits an infused salve offers.
Recipe Instructions
Making your own CBD salve is a relatively simple process.
With only five ingredients, you’ll be able to make your own salve with little cost as well.
The most expensive part of the salve is the CBD oil, but considering it can last you a long time, we consider it more of an investment than a singular cost for a salve recipe.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup of coconut oil (or another carrier oil like olive oil, almond oil, or jojoba oil)
- 1/4 cup of beeswax (for consistency; use candelilla wax for a vegan option)
- CBD oil or isolate (the dosage will depend on how strong you want your salve; typically around 500–1000 mg of CBD.)
- If you’re using CBD oil, remember it’s already mixed with a carrier oil. You may need to adjust the 1/2 cup of coconut oil to balance the ratios. On the other hand, CBD isolate is usually in powder form and won't require such adjustments.
- Essential oils (optional for fragrance and added benefits, e.g., lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint)
- Vitamin E oil (optional, acts as a preservative and moisturizer)
Tools:
- Double boiler or a heatproof bowl over a pot of boiling water
- Stirring utensil (spoon or spatula)
- Measuring cups
- Small glass jars or containers with lids for storage
Instructions:
- Buy CBD Oil: Purchase CBD oil from a reputable source. Choose between full spectrum CBD, broad spectrum CBD, or CBD isolate. We recommend a full spectrum CBD oil for enhanced potential benefits and effects.
- Prepare a double boiler: Fill a small pot with a few inches of water and place a heatproof bowl or a double boiler on top. Bring the water to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
- Melt the coconut oil and beeswax: Add the coconut oil and beeswax into the double boiler. Stir occasionally as they melt together, making sure not to overheat or burn the oils. This will take around 5–10 minutes until completely liquefied.
- Add CBD: Once the oil and wax have melted, remove the mixture from the heat. Stir in your preferred amount of CBD oil or isolate. If using isolate, ensure it dissolves completely into the mixture.
- Add essential oils (optional): At this point, you can add a few drops of essential oils for fragrance and additional therapeutic properties. Common choices include lavender for relaxation, peppermint for cooling, or eucalyptus for a soothing effect.
- Add Vitamin E oil (optional): If you’re using Vitamin E oil, add a small amount (around 1 teaspoon) to the mixture. This helps extend the shelf life of the salve and adds moisturizing properties.
- Pour into containers: While the mixture is still liquid, carefully pour it into your glass jars or containers. Use caution as it will be hot. Allow the salve to cool completely, which can take a few hours.
- Store: Once cooled, your CBD salve is ready to use. Keep the jars in a cool, dark place to preserve the quality of the salve. It should last for several months.
Tips:
- Adjust the CBD potency based on your needs. A higher concentration of CBD will make a stronger salve.
- You can experiment with different carrier oils, such as hemp seed oil or shea butter, to tailor the salve's consistency and benefits.
